Abstract

This study examines the relationship between self-control, phubbing, and Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) among Generation Z using a quantitative approach. The sample included 374 students aged 18–25, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using validated instruments: the Generic Scale of Phubbing, Brief Self-Control Scale, and Fear of Missing Out Scale. Analysis was conducted with JASP version 0.95.3.0. Results showed that self-control was positively and significantly associated with phubbing (estimate = 0.089; p = 0.001), contrary to the initial hypothesis predicting a negative. FoMO was also positively and significantly related to phubbing (estimate = 0.215; p < 0.001), while self-control was positively related to FoMO (estimate = 0.452; p < 0.001). Mediation analysis revealed that FoMO significantly mediated the relationship between self-control and phubbing (indirect effect = 0.097; p < 0.001). These findings highlight the complexity of Generation Z’s digital behavior, especially its ties to self-regulation and anxiety.
