Abstract

University students represent a group of individuals in a developmental phase toward adulthood. Friendship among students is not merely a matter of social interaction but also reflects the quality of interpersonal communication built through shared experiences. Research on interpersonal communication in student friendships remains relatively limited, particularly studies that deeply explore students’ subjective experiences. This study employed a qualitative research method, in which the researcher applied participant observation as the primary data collection technique. The data analysis in this study utilized a thematic analysis approach reinforced with grounded theory, allowing themes to emerge inductively from the data while being integrated with theoretical frameworks to strengthen the validity of the findings. Field observations at Universitas Airlangga revealed that student friendships are conducted in a hybrid pattern, encompassing both face-to-face interactions and virtual communication. The findings indicate that interpersonal communication within student friendships at Universitas Airlangga is shaped through everyday interactions imbued with emotional and social meaning. Although interpersonal communication plays a crucial role in strengthening student friendships, the intensity of interactions and the use of digital media do not always foster emotional closeness, as they may lead to fatigue, misunderstandings, or relational imbalances. This study contributes to enriching the understanding of the dynamics of interpersonal communication in student friendships, while also offering practical implications for the development of more effective communication strategies in higher education settings.
