Abstract
This study aims to describe the production of emotional language by characters in DhotDesign YouTube videos from a psycholinguistic perspective. The focus of the research is on the types of emotions expressed and the stages of language production involved in the characters’ utterances. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collected through observation of DhotDesign YouTube videos using the listening and note-taking techniques. The data consist of characters’ utterances containing emotional expressions, obtained through direct observation of the audiovisual context, including intonation, facial expressions, and situational context. Data analysis is based on Paul Ekman’s theory of basic emotions and Willem J. M. Levelt’s theory of language production, which includes the stages of conceptualization, formulation, and articulation. The findings reveal 24 utterances containing emotional language production, representing six basic emotions: anger, fear, sadness, happiness, disgust, and surprise. Emotional language production is predominantly found at the conceptualization stage, particularly in spontaneous and reactive utterances. These findings indicate that the speaker’s emotional state plays a significant role in influencing the mental processes involved in language production. This study contributes to psycholinguistic research by highlighting the relationship between emotion and language production in audiovisual communication within digital media.
