Abstract

Background: The high prevalence of hypertension and diabetes mellitus among the elderly in Wates Village, coupled with low knowledge about disease management and the safe use of medicinal plants, necessitated an educational intervention. This activity aimed to enhance the elderly's understanding of using family medicinal plants (TOGA) as appropriate and safe complementary therapy. Methods: Counseling was conducted face-to-face with 30 elderly participants using interactive lectures, discussions, leaflet distribution, and evaluation through pre-test and post-test.Results: A significant increase in knowledge was observed, with the average pre-test score of 42.7% rising to 86.7% in the post-test. Participants demonstrated a better understanding of the benefits of herbs such as ginger, bay leaf, lemongrass, and bitter melon, as well as the importance of safe herbal use as a complement to medical therapy. Conclusion: The counseling successfully improved the elderly's knowledge and awareness in utilizing herbal plants safely and encouraged self-reliance in health management.
