Abstract

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) and other degenerative diseases are chronic health problems that require comprehensive management, including the evidence-based use of traditional medicine. Cibetok Village, Gunung Kaler Subdistrict, Tangerang Regency, has local herbal plant potential, one of which is Sambung Nyowo leaves (Gynura procumbens), also known as “insulin leaf.” However, its utilization has not been optimal due to limited scientific literacy among the community. This community service program aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of PKK women cadres and the Cibetok Village community in using Sambung Nyowo leaves as a complementary herbal remedy to support family health. The method employed a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach through educational counseling and herbal processing training conducted at the Cibetok Village Hall on Sunday, 30 November 2025. The activity involved 19 participants, predominantly PKK women cadres, who socially play a central role as health promotion agents at the family and community levels. The material covered the active compounds (flavonoids, saponins, and tannins) and the health benefits of Sambung Nyowo leaves, including blood glucose control, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, and metabolic effects. Based on the pre-test and post-test evaluation, the program results showed a significant 30% increase in participants’ understanding of the pharmacological benefits of Sambung Nyowo leaves, as well as increased motivation to implement traditional medicine independently and rationally. The use of G. procumbens by PKK cadres has the potential to strengthen community self-reliance in herbal literacy and treatment to address preventive health problems.
