Abstract

This Classroom Action Research (CAR) aims to improve the listening skills of grade XE4 students through the use of English story videos with adaptive narration (voice over) provided by the teacher. The background of this study lies in the low interest and limited ability of students to comprehend English videos narrated by native speakers, as they often struggle with unfamiliar vocabulary, identifying main ideas, and capturing specific information.

The research was conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The research instrument was a listening comprehension test assessing the ability to identify specific information, understand main ideas, recognize vocabulary from context, make inferences, and listening accuracy. The instructional media were developed by simplifying unfamiliar vocabulary identified in the pretest, slowing down the speech tempo, and providing synonyms to support student understanding. The teaching strategy combined direct classroom narration with recorded voice overs for independent learning.

The findings revealed a significant improvement in students’ listening skills. The average scores increased by 22% from pretest to posttest, and students demonstrated higher engagement during the learning process. Therefore, the use of English story videos with adaptive narration is proven effective in enhancing students’ listening skills and fostering their motivation to learn.
