Abstract

The transformation of national education policy through the Merdeka Curriculum requires elementary education institutions, including Madrasah Ibtidaiyah, to implement adaptive, contextual, and student-centered learning practices. One strategic innovation promoted within this curriculum is the strengthening of co-curricular activities as a medium for developing students’ character, competencies, and learning autonomy. This study aims to explore in depth the implementation of co-curricular activities within the Merdeka Curriculum at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah and to examine their implications for the learning process and student development. This research employs a qualitative approach using a case study design. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with school principals and teachers, and documentation analysis of learning plans and co-curricular programs. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data display, and interpretative conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the implementation of co-curricular activities plays a significant role in strengthening the integration of religious moderation values, 21st-century skills, and experiential learning approaches. Furthermore, co-curricular activities function as a bridge between intracurricular learning and the holistic development of students’ character. However, challenges remain in terms of teacher readiness and effective time management. This study contributes both theoretically and practically to the development of innovation in Islamic elementary education and serves as a valuable reference for students of the Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Teacher Education Program in understanding the contextual and sustainable implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum.
