Abstract
Tafsir bi al-ra’yi is one method of interpreting the Qur'an that uses the ijtihad (independent reasoning) and intellectual capacity of the interpreter (mufasir) in understanding the verses of Allah, while still being based on the correct principles of interpretation. This article discusses the procedures and approaches of the tafsir bi al-ra’yi system, starting from the methodological steps that must be taken by the interpreter to the approaches used, whether linguistic, rational, or thematic. The purpose of this discussion is to avoid subjective and speculative interpretations and to provide a more systematic picture of how interpretation based on ra'yi (reasoned opinion) can be carried out scientifically. Therefore, tafsir bi al-ra'yi can be used to expand the understanding of Muslims about the Qur'an along with the times while maintaining the basic principles of Islam.
