Abstract

Malay culture is an important part of the identity of the people of Riau, passed down from generation to generation through language, customs, arts, etiquette, and values of togetherness. This study aims to understand how students of FISIP at the University of Riau perceive Malay culture in academic and social life, as well as the factors that influence it. Using a qualitative approach and field methods, data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation from 30 students as informants. The results of the study indicate that students see Malay culture not only as a tradition but also as a moral guide, a sense of identity, and a source of social values that shape attitudes, behavior, and interactions on campus. This understanding is influenced by internal factors such as family, education, and community environment, as well as external factors such as globalization, social media, and modern social interactions. Malay culture is also present in practical activities on campus through events such as pantun competitions, dance performances, and cultural seminars, demonstrating that the understanding of this culture is dynamic, evolving according to the students' experiences, and serving as an important foundation for preserving local culture amid the influence of modernization.
