Abstract
The fact that Indonesian language usage remains inconsistent in academic writing, particularly in spelling, diction, effective sentence construction, as well as text cohesion and coherence, has motivated this study. The aim of this research is to evaluate the quality of Indonesian academic writing and to describe methods for improving students’ scientific writing skills. The research subjects are final-year undergraduate students, while the objects of study are theses and journal articles. A descriptive qualitative design with a content analysis approach was employed. Research instruments focused on indicators such as spelling, diction, sentence structure, and paragraph coherence. Data were thoroughly documented and recorded, then analyzed through data reduction, categorization, and interpretation. The results show that students have applied academic Indonesian effectively in most of their scientific works. However, significant weaknesses remain in using appropriate sentences and diction for academic contexts. The findings indicate that academic writing in Indonesian must be continuously trained in higher education. To improve students’ linguistic competence in the future, this study recommends the development of more integrated academic writing learning models supported by digital technology.
