The phenomenon of living together a situation where men and women live under the same roof without a legitimate marriage has become a growing social issue in Indonesia. This study aims to examine the practice of living together from the perspective of Islamic law, Indonesian positive law, and social moral values. Using a qualitative approach with a normative-juridical and sociological framework, this research relies on secondary data sources such as the Qur’an, national legislation, scholarly literature, and statistical reports from official institutions. The results show that, from an Islamic legal perspective, living together contradicts the principles of maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah, which emphasize the preservation of honor (ḥifẓ al-‘ird) and lineage (ḥifẓ al-nasl). From the standpoint of Indonesian law, such relationships have no legal validity because only marriages conducted according to religious law and registered by the state are recognized. Socially, this phenomenon reflects a moral shift influenced by globalization and liberal values that prioritize individual freedom over communal ethics. The study concludes that living together undermines religious principles, legal norms, and social morality, requiring an integrative approach through religious education, firm yet fair legal enforcement, and moral development to restore the sanctity of family and societal harmony.
