Abstract

The issue of organic waste, particularly kitchen waste, remains a major challenge in waste management, especially in enclosed environments such as correctional institutions. Improperly managed waste can cause pollution and negatively impact health and the surrounding environment. On the other hand, the need for high-quality and affordable animal feed is also a crucial issue in supporting food security within correctional facilities. Based on these conditions, this community service program introduced maggot (Black Soldier Fly larvae) cultivation as an innovative and environmentally friendly solution capable of decomposing kitchen waste while producing alternative feed for livestock. The implementation method was carried out through participatory and educational approaches by directly involving inmates in training, implementation, and maggot cultivation management. The results showed that the program successfully developed a sustainable maggot colony, utilized kitchen waste as a growth medium, and provided new technical skills for inmates. This initiative also contributed to the creation of a zero waste system and supported local food security in Lapas Class I Madiun. With the active participation of inmates and support from prison officers, this program has the potential to be expanded and replicated in other correctional facilities as a form of independence-based and environmentally conscious rehabilitation.
