Abstract

The digital transformation has significantly impacted the criminal justice system, including the implementation of online trials in correctional facilities. At Dumai Class IIB Detention Center, virtual hearings were previously held in sterile areas with limited supervision, raising security and order concerns. This community service project aimed to improve the online trial system by relocating the hearing room to a non-sterile area near the guard post and implementing the use of identification vests for detainees. The method included coordination with prison officials and academic supervisors, field observation, technical planning, socialization to officers and detainees, and implementation followed by evaluation. The results indicated enhanced supervision, reduced potential for security breaches, and improved order during trial sessions. The identification vests facilitated visual verification of detainees, while the new room location allowed for closer monitoring. These findings suggest that simple yet targeted innovations can enhance the quality and security of online trials. The importance of this result lies in its potential for replication in other correctional institutions as a practical response to the challenges of digitalization in the justice system.
