Abstract

This study aims to analyze the learning difficulties of elementary school students in converting fractions, decimals, and percentages as fundamental mathematical competencies. The study used a descriptive qualitative method with 30 fifth-grade students of Pekanbaru State Elementary School as subjects. Data collection techniques were carried out through diagnostic tests, in-depth interviews, and learning observations with a triangulation approach to ensure data validity. The results showed that students experienced difficulties in three main aspects. First, understanding basic concepts where 60% of students did not understand the equivalence of number representations and 55% misinterpreted the meaning of fractions. Second, conversion procedures with 75% of students failing in the division algorithm and 72% incorrectly applying the concept of percent. Third, applications in contextual story problems experienced by 70% of students. Factors causing difficulties include cognitive aspects (weak understanding of place value and lack of mastery of basic arithmetic operations), pedagogical (less varied learning methods and minimal visual media), and psychological (math anxiety in 40% of students.
