Abstract

Media tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai sarana penyebaran informasi, tetapi juga sebagai ruang produksi makna dan arena pertarungan kepentingan. Dalam perkembangan studi komunikasi, media dapat dipahami baik sebagai objek riset ilmiah maupun sebagai alat kekuasaan yang memengaruhi opini publik. Perspektif kritis menempatkan media dalam relasi erat dengan struktur ekonomi, politik, dan ideologi yang membentuk isi serta praktik komunikasinya. Penelitian ini bertujuan merefleksikan posisi media dalam studi komunikasi dengan menelaah bagaimana media dikonstruksi sebagai objek kajian akademik sekaligus instrumen kekuasaan sosial. Metode yang digunakan adalah pendekatan kualitatif dengan analisis literatur kritis terhadap teori komunikasi, ekonomi politik media, serta studi budaya. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahwa media tidak bersifat netral, melainkan terikat pada kepentingan institusional dan relasi dominasi tertentu. Oleh karena itu, studi komunikasi perlu mengembangkan sikap reflektif-kritis agar mampu membaca media tidak hanya sebagai teknologi informasi, tetapi juga sebagai kekuatan sosial yang membentuk realitas.
