KRISIS IDENTITAS RELIGIUS DI ERA MODERN: TANTANGAN MUSLIM MILENIAL MENJAGA JATI DIRI FENOMENA PERGESERAN NILAI DAN IDENTITAS KEISLAMAN PADA GENERASI MUDA

Abstract

The crisis of religious identity has become an increasingly prominent phenomenon in the modern era, particularly among Muslim millennials. The currents of globalization, the rapid development of digital technology, and the dominance of popular culture have significantly influenced the mindset, lifestyle, and value system of younger generations, potentially shifting Islamic identity that once served as a guiding principle in life. This value shift is characterized by a weakening commitment to religious teachings, the rise of moral relativism, and a tendency to position religion merely as a formal symbol rather than as a foundation for behavior. This article examines the crisis of religious identity among Muslim millennials from an Islamic perspective, which emphasizes the importance of balance between worldly life and the hereafter, strengthening faith (aqidah), and cultivating noble character (akhlaq). The method employed in this study is a literature review with a theological reflection approach toward various contemporary socio-religious phenomena. The findings indicate that the crisis of religious identity is influenced by weak internalization of Islamic values, the lack of contextual religious education, and the strong influence of modern culture that tends to be individualistic and secular. Islam offers solutions through strengthening faith, comprehensive religious understanding, and the development of spiritual awareness, enabling Muslim millennials to maintain their Islamic identity amid the challenges of changing times. The conclusion emphasizes that a strong religious identity is a crucial foundation in facing the challenges of modernity; therefore, continuous efforts are needed to instill Islamic values so that young generations can live meaningful, balanced lives grounded in faith.
