Abstract
The Serawai people possess a rich cultural heritage, but there are still few records of their traditional houses, known as berugau houses. This study attempts to reconstruct the typology and cultural values of berugau houses based on the following objects: the Pangiran Marzoeki House, the Pangiran Djuana House, the Angku Adat House of Tuanku Raja Bediri Mersikin, the Pangiran Arfan House, the Pangiran Dayok House, and the Pangiran Mukmin House. There are two types of berugau houses: the ordinary berugau house with a jemba-belayar roof and the Bandung berugau house with a limau roof. Compared with the objects in previous studies, the typology of the berugau houses in this study differs in spatial arrangement, but the construction system and cultural values are nearly identical.
