Abstract
In scientific writing, the effective use of Indonesian is an important component that determines the quality of academic communication. Language that is straightforward, clear, and consistent helps readers understand the author's ideas without leaving an impression of uncertainty. However, many students still have difficulty applying linguistic rules, including spelling, sentence structure, and paragraph cohesion and coherence The purpose of this study is to evaluate the level of understanding Indonesian students regarding effective Indonesian language and to identify errors in their scientific works. This study was conducted through a quantitative approach using a descriptive-analytical type. The research sample consisted of forty students from various universities inIndonesiawho were selected at random. Data were collected through the distribution of questionnaires and analysis of students' scientific work documents. The research instruments included a questionnaire on students' understanding of scientific language and guidelines for analysing texts. For the questionnaire, the data were analysed descriptively and quantitatively, and for the written documents, the content was analysed. The results of the study show that there are differences in the way people understand theory and how they use language. Although 70% of students said they understood spelling rules, 80% of scientific papers still contained spelling errors. Long and wordy sentences (72.5%), ambiguous sentences (62.5%), and a lack of paragraph cohesion and coherence (each more than 55%) were the other most common errors. The results indicate that to improve the quality of Indonesian students' scientific writing, it is necessary to enhance academic writing skills through intensive practice, faculty guidance, and the use of language checking technology.
