Abstract

This study aims to improve the understanding of mathematical concepts of fifth-grade students of Mijen 2 Elementary School through the implementation of a collaboration-oriented deep learning approach. The study used the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method which was implemented in two cycles, including the planning stage, action implementation, observation, and reflection. The research subjects were 19 students. Data collection was carried out through a mathematical concept understanding test and student collaboration observation sheets. Data analysis was carried out descriptively quantitatively by comparing learning outcomes at the pre-cycle stage, cycle I, and cycle II. The results showed that the implementation of a collaboration-oriented deep learning approach was able to significantly improve students' understanding of mathematical concepts. In the pre-cycle stage, student learning completeness reached 42.1% (8 out of 19 students). In cycle I, the percentage of completeness increased to 68.4% (13 students). Furthermore, in cycle II, learning completeness increased to 89.5% (17 students). The increase in conceptual understanding was supported by increased student involvement in group discussions, the ability to express opinions, and cooperation in solving mathematical problems. The conclusion of this study shows that the collaboration-oriented deep learning approach is effective in improving students' understanding of mathematical concepts of fifth-grade elementary school students.
