Abstract
The thickness of the oil layer in the Continuous Settling Tank (CST) is a critical parameter in the process of separating oil, water, and sludge by gravity. This thickness directly affects the efficiency of separating impurities and the water content in the produced Crude Palm Oil (CPO). This study aims to analyze the effect of the oil layer thickness in the Continuous Settling Tank (CST) on the water content and impurity levels in the Crude Palm Oil (CPO) produced at PTPN IV PKS Adolina. Data were obtained through direct observation and sampling of oil from the CST before and after the vacuum drying process during the period of August 4-9, 2025. The results show that the water content and impurity levels of CPO before the vacuum process averaged 0.62% and 0.048%, while after the vacuum process became 0.19% and 0.024%. These values still exceed the company’s quality standards, which are a maximum water content of 0.15% and a maximum impurity level of 0.020%. The ideal oil thickness in the CST ranges from 30 to 50 cm. Thickness below 30 cm, especially at the start of processing (25 cm), tends to produce higher dirt levels. In this case, the oil thickness in the CST significantly affects the quality of CPO, particularly in reducing the dirt content. To improve the quality of CPO, it is recommended that the thickness of the oil layer in the CST is maintained at a minimum of 30 cm, and routine maintenance is performed on the clarification station equipment, especially the CST and vacuum dryer.
