Abstract

This study empirically examines the effect of labor wages and exports on the productivity of the manufacturing industry in Indonesia using monthly time-series data for the period 2017–2020. Secondary data were obtained from official institutions and analyzed using multiple linear regression, preceded by a series of classical assumption tests to validate the model. The results indicate that, individually, labor wages do not have a statistically significant effect on manufacturing productivity, although the negative coefficient suggests the presence of cost pressure on production. In contrast, exports have a positive and significant effect, indicating that higher export activity is associated with increased output and greater efficiency in the manufacturing sector. Simultaneously, both independent variables are jointly significant, with a coefficient of determination of 64.7%, showing that the model is able to explain a substantial share of the variation in productivity. These findings suggest that the productivity of Indonesia’s manufacturing industry is more strongly driven by international trade dynamics than by changes in labor wage levels. Therefore, strengthening export competitiveness and enhancing production efficiency are crucial strategies to support future productivity growth in the national manufacturing sector.
